Review

An assassin, Frank, wakes up to discover that they have undergone gender reassignment surgery. Determined to get revenge, Frank tries to discover what has happened and who is responsible.

The Assignment (2016) on IMDb

Michelle Rodriguez (Furious 7, Machete Kills) plays Frank, an assassin who is double crossed by gangsters and awakens from unconsciousness finding he has been given gender reassignment. This action movie follows Frank as he seeks his revenge as, now, a hitwoman.

Tomboy is brought to you by Director Walter Hill who directed Red Heat and 48 Hours and was also Producer in the Alien Franchise so a reasonable action movie is expected.

Sigourney Weaver (Alien, Avatar) plays “The Doctor”, a similar character to that of Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs – creepy, focused and psychopathic. Sadly, this character does not work despite the efforts of Sigourney as the script is simply not there for her.

The way Michelle Rodriguez is made up to look like Frank is quite comical and reminiscent of Gary in Team America: World Police. Luckily this is not for the whole movie as gender reassignment takes place.

As you would expect from Walter Hill, there are lots of action scenes but with very little suspense. The plot is very thin with little depth and no clear message or meaning. Tomboy leaves you wondering “Why would you make this movie”, “Why should it be shared with the world?” and “How did you get Sigourney Weaver to play a part in it?”

Tomboy is available now on digital platforms and released on DVD on 3rd April 2017.

Like most people I watch movies and TV to relax. I usually manage to watch between 3 and 5 movies a week and like to have a couple of series on the go at the same time to break things up. Yes… I do have square eyes!
